King’s Barbecue is a small family restaurant in Petersburg, Virginia that was founded in 1946 by John King. It has been family owned and operated for 78 years. We specialize in a Southside Virginia style of barbecue. Pork, Beef, and Chicken are slowly smoked using oak wood and marinated with our famous barbecue sauce that was inspired from a 100 year old recipe. Our focus is on simplicity, consistency, and tradition when it comes to making our products.
Our sauce is known as a Virginia style sauce. Specifically it is called a Southside Virginia sauce but can also be known as a Tidewater/Piedmont Region sauce. Its base ingredients are vinegar, tomato, and mustard. This particular recipe originated at the turn of the 20th century when tomatoes started to be introduced into sauces, but Virginia BBQ has origins that go back to the 1600’s. Although it is lesser known than most styles of BBQ, due to its history having seemed to been forgotten over the years, Virginia Barbecue is the mother of American BBQ styles. Thanks to recent research it is starting to see a comeback.
Our product is unique for its tangy taste. It has a bit of a bite by itself but has a sweetness when mix in with smoked meats. It can be used as a marinade, a seasoning for stews, and a condiment. But even though vinegar is the main ingredient it does not over power the sauce. And that’s because, unlike many North Carolina sauces, our product is slowly simmered for many hours to produce its unique flavor.
The sauce has been made by our family for 78 years. It is cooked, bottled, labeled, and shipped by only one person who knows the secret recipe. It is the only sauce we served at our restaurant and it is a staple in the pantry of many Virginia family homes.
